Streaming services are the hot new fad for the tech and entertainment industries, and DC has been the latest company to jump on the bandwagon. Back in July, DC Comics unveiled its own video streaming platform, appropriately dubbed "DC Universe."
Naturally, the announcement of yet another streaming service wouldn't have attracted much interest, so DC simultaneously unveiled "Titans," DC Universe's first exclusive show. Titans is set to be a live-action reboot of the popular animated series "Teen Titans."
Though DC didn't give us a launch date when it first unveiled DC Universe, we now know that the service will hit the web tomorrow, with an interesting feature we didn't know about before - comic book reading.
In October, HBO Max confirmed that Warner Bros films will be streaming on their service after 45 days, at least in Europe. In a statement, HBO Max EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) general manager Christina Sulebakk said: "I have another amazing piece of news to drop. For the first time, in the Nordics at launch, and next year in Spain, Portugal and central and eastern Europe, HBO Max will make Warner Bros films available on the platform just 45 days after their theatrical release."
Update: DC Universe is now called DC Universe Infinite, and only has a large library of online digital comic books from DC Comics. All movies and TV shows, including the DC Universe originals, have been removed from the service. Many have already transferred to the HBO Max streaming service and more will be added in the months ahead.
In 2018, Warner Bros. decided to launch a new streaming service dedicated to its DC Comics library of superhero characters and stories. In addition to offering access to thousands of digital comics, and classic DC movies and TV shows, DC Universe also launched several animated and live-action TV series that were exclusive to the service.
However, the service never caught a lot of traction in terms of subscribers. In September 2020, just over two years after the official launch, the company announced that DC Universe would be losing its video content to HBO Max, and would concentrate on offering digital comics.
DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television hinted at a new streaming service as early as April 2017. Managed by Warner Bros. Digital Networks Group, the service would stream exclusive live-action TV shows. Other goodies included access to older live-action and animated movies and TV shows, a huge library of digital comics, and exclusive access to a members-only shop.
As we mentioned, Warner Bros announced in September 2020 that DC Universe will no longer offer any video streaming content. The service now has a new name, DC Comics Infinite, and will continue to offer access to thousands of digital comic books. New print issues of DC Comics titles will appear on the service six months after they are published. It will also be the home for digital-first comics and comics that will only be available to read on the service.
The DCEU began with the film Man of Steel (2013), a reboot of the Superman film series, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which served as a reboot of the Batman film series. These films were followed by more than a dozen films, and was expanded to include television series for the streaming service HBO Max in 2022, beginning with Peacemaker. Following the restructuring of DC Studios and the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran in 2022, the franchise will be largely rebooted with the release of The Flash, leading into the DC Universe films and television series planned by Gunn and Safran.[1]
In 2016, as part of DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League, both Geoff Johns and Kevin Smith referred to the franchise's name as being the "Justice League Universe".[9] During the DC Films panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, a video banner displayed the words "Welcome to the Worlds of DC", after showcasing some upcoming films. As a result, some media outlets interpreted this as DC officially naming their shared film universe as the "Worlds of DC".[10][11] However, in March 2020, Jim Lee referred to the franchise as the DC Extended Universe at C2E2.[12] The franchise was officially titled DC Extended Universe when the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max launched the following May.[13]
In May 2020, WarnerMedia launched the streaming service HBO Max. In September, HBO Max ordered Peacemaker, the DCEU's first television series and a spin-off of the film The Suicide Squad.[52] After this announcement, Walter Hamada stated that DC Films was interested in producing spin-off series for every film in the DCEU slate for HBO Max.[53] In February 2021, HBO Max and executive producer J. J. Abrams began developing multiple series based on the individual team members of the Justice League Dark, with a plan to eventually culminate these projects in a crossover and team-up miniseries.[54]
DC is set to be a major component of Max as the service continues to compete in the streaming space, which has been dominated by genre IP like Marvel and "Star Wars" at Disney+; "The Witcher" and "Stranger Things" at Netflix; and "The Wheel of Time" and "The Boys" at Amazon.
Max announced in October that it had renewed "Titans" for a fourth season. The series, which features characters like Robin, Nightwing, and Superboy, moved from DC Universe to Max when the former transformed from a streaming service to a digital-comics service.
The Lost City is still hanging in there in some theaters, but those who want to watch the Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum comedy-thriller can do so in the comfort of their home starting tomorrow. The film will be on Paramount+ as of then, continuing the trend of major releases hitting streaming services 45 days from opening in theaters. This film made solid money during its run, but that shortened window has made it was easier to maybe skip some films like this and wait for streaming.
Compared with rival streaming services, HBO Max's ad-free $15-a-month pricing may feel steep. Disney Plus is $8 a month, and Apple TV Plus is $5, and Apple offers extended free trials for anyone who's bought a new Apple gadget. But HBO Max's price is just less than Netflix's most popular plan, which is $15.50.
Through Google, HBO Max has an app for Android phones and tablets in the Google Play store, and you'll be able to sign up inside the app with an in-app purchase. You'll also be able to stream HBO Max on Android TV, Chromebook and Google Chromecast. If you previously subscribed to HBO Now through Google Play, you're automatically able to log in to HBO Max at no additional charge, and you'll continue to be billed through Google. And YouTube TV, the streaming pay-TV service operated by Google's YouTube, will also carry HBO Max. 2ff7e9595c
